🤖 xAI’s Grok will be available on 𝕏 next week

Elon Musk’s company, X, is set to introduce the AI chatbot Grok to its Premium+ subscribers next week, promising a unique personality and access to real-time knowledge via the X platform. Grok aims to differentiate itself by responding with wit and a rebellious streak, even tackling “spicy” questions rejected by other AI systems. The anticipated launch follows X’s efforts to boost Premium subscriptions and address an advertiser exodus.

Musk, a former OpenAI co-founder, has been vocal about Grok, criticizing ChatGPT-4 and highlighting the importance of humor in AI. Grok, trained on a knowledge base similar to ChatGPT and Meta’s Llama 2, will leverage real-time info from X and the ability to search the web for up-to-date information. Users granted early access to Grok have apparently found indications that X will incorporate a dedicated tab enabling direct access to Grok within the X platform.

Our thoughts

In our opinion, xAI has a big advantage compared to OpenAI. They can integrate Grok into X and thus access a large number of users who are active on X every day. Also, X is the home of tech enthusiasts who want to try out Grok. In short, X’s user base is ideal for the release of Grok. We are excited to try out the new chatbot.

💬 Inflection AI releases a new LLM

Inflection announced the completion of training for Inflection-2, their latest language model, positioned as the second most capable LLM globally. The model showcases enhanced factual knowledge, improved stylistic control, and significantly advanced reasoning compared to Inflection-1. Inflection-2’s training on 5,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs places it in the same league as Google’s PaLM 2 LLM, outperforming it on various standard AI benchmarks.

Inflection emphasizes safety, security, and trustworthiness in large model training and actively supports global alignment and governance efforts for this critical technology. The collaboration with partners NVIDIA, Microsoft, and CoreWeave has been crucial in building the AI cluster supporting Inflection-1 and Inflection-2. The results of Inflection-2’s performance, showcased against prominent models, highlight its significant achievements, positioning it as one of the most performant models outside of GPT-4.

Our thoughts

The dominance of OpenAI does not stop competitors from developing new models and shows how tough the quality battle is. The AI models will become even stronger in the future, and it is good to have several minds working on them.

😬 Sam Altman: A week of chaos at OpenAI

On Friday, the board of OpenAI abruptly ousted CEO Sam Altman, leading to the resignation of co-founder Greg Brockman and several employees in protest. The Management Board cited “communication problems” as the reasons behind Altman’s termination. Following this, on Saturday, it was revealed that OpenAI staff had issued an ultimatum to the board, demanding resignations and the reinstatement of Altman and Brockman, or else they would depart.

By Sunday evening, Emmett Shear was appointed as the new interim CEO of OpenAI. There is speculation that OpenAI has achieved a significant step towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which may have caused Altman’s ouster. After five tumultuous days, Sam Altman officially returned to his role as CEO of OpenAI. Numerous questions remain about the exact reasons for Altman’s initial dismissal.

Our thoughts

The events this week will forever go down in the history of AI. If there is one takeaway, it is that some at OpenAI see the development of AI as a threat.
