πŸ’¬ NXAI's xLSTM Ambitions

The inventor of the LSTM algorithm, Sepp Hochreiter, wants to compete with OpenAI with the further development of its LSTM algorithm (xLSTM). The German AI researcher announced on Monday that he started the company NXAI together with Austrian industrial partners in cooperation with the University of Linz.

In the 1990s, Hochreiter invented the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm. The algorithm improved many AI applications. According to him, a new edition of LSTM has a good chance of surpassing the AI models from Google and OpenAI.

The computing power required for xLSTM should be significantly lower than that of models from OpenAI or Google. With its increased efficiency and performance in the processing of texts, xLSTM technology could set a new standard in AI language processing.

Our thoughts

Many AI applications use the LSTM algorithm. Examples are Google Translate or Apple's Quicktype function. Successful further development of this technology could lead to a new standard for language models. We are very excited about future developments.

πŸ€– Bye bye Google Bard, Hello Google Gemini

Google renames its chatbot Bard to Gemini, just like the large language model on which it is already based. In addition, they released a new mobile app (initially in the USA) and access to Gemini Ultra 1.0. Gemini Ultra 1.0 is a GPT-4 competitor and Google's largest language model. Images generated with Gemini will now feature an invisible digital watermark using DeepMind's tool SynthID.

Our thoughts

It's done! Now, Google has a real competitor to GPT-4. The LLM race continues! We are curious to see when OpenAI will respond with a new model. But one thing is clear, Google is closing the gap on OpenAI.

✍🏽 Which LLM do you use most often? ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok? Write it in the comments.

πŸŽ‡ Labeling of AI-Generated Images on Facebook, Instagram and Threads

Meta has published a blog article about labeling AI-generated images on its platforms. Meta works with industry partners on technical standards for identifying AI-generated video and audio.

In the coming months, Meta will implement labeling for images posted on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads when industry-standard indicators suggest that they are AI-generated.

Our thoughts

This initiative demonstrates Meta's commitment to working with industry partners to establish technical standards for identifying AI-generated video and audio content. AI images are getting better and better, and it will soon be difficult to distinguish them from real images. It is an important step to strengthen transparency on Meta's platforms.
