🤖 Baidu Ernie Bot 4.0: GPT-4 has a new competitor

Baidu Inc.’s founder, Robin Li, claims that the company’s language model, Ernie 4.0, has caught up with OpenAI’s GPT-4, positioning Baidu as a leader in China’s AI race against the US. Ernie has demonstrated its ability to provide answers and solve complex puzzles, with over 45 million users. Baidu aims to surpass its internet rivals, such as Alibaba and Tencent, through AI advancements. However, Chinese tech firms face challenges due to US sanctions on advanced chips and Beijing’s strict censorship. Baidu has integrated Ernie into various products and hopes it will become a core business.

Our thoughts

Microsoft and OpenAI are trying to establish their GPT-4 based products in China. But ChatGPT and competing offers such as Google Bard are not officially available in China, so Chinese companies have a free playing field for their own developments. In addition to Baidu, this also includes Alibaba and Tencent. However, they must adhere to the government’s guidelines. In our opinion, this is a big step for Chinese AI development to catch up with products like ChatGPT and Bard.

Universal Music has filed a lawsuit against AI startup Anthropic, accusing it of widespread infringement of copyrighted song lyrics. The lawsuit cites examples such as Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude generating almost identical copies of lyrics to songs like “Roar” by Katy Perry and “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor. The lawsuit claims that Anthropic unlawfully copies and disseminates copyrighted works in the building process and operating its AI models.

Other music publishers, including Concord and ABKCO, are also named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit. Anthropic, founded in 2021 and backed by companies like Google and Salesforce, has raised $750 million and has been valued at $4.1 billion.

Our thoughts

The creator’s copyright should also apply to AI models! We find it irresponsible how large AI companies unlawfully use data. These companies must also comply with the law. We also don’t think it’s right for these tools to distribute information without citing sources. Tools like ChatGPT turn the internet into a huge garbage heap because many people publish articles without fact-checking. In our view, companies like OpenAI and Anthropic need to compensate creators for used content.

😬 Kendall Jenner becomes “Billie”: Meta’s AI celebrities meet Resistance

Meta has introduced a feature that allows fans to interact with AI chatbots that mimic celebrities, but the reaction on social media has been mostly negative. One reason for this is that the AI avatars appear under different names, causing confusion and rejection from fans. While Meta makes efforts to clarify the AI background on its Instagram profile, there is no indication during normal use that the AI avatars are not real people.

Fans have expressed concerns about the project, including skepticism about whether the celebrities agreed to participate. Meta reportedly paid celebrities up to $5 million for rights to her face and voice. Additionally, the use of different names for the avatars could have legal implications, as the AI siblings may not always align with the real person’s views.

Our thoughts

From our point of view, it is questionable whether we really want to talk to an AI in the future instead of a real person. We clearly prefer people! We also think it’s terrible when you try to generate real people with AI. People follow people, not an AI!
